Matariki (Paige)

Questions

1. What is Matariki and who celebrates it?

2. What are the names of the Matariki stars?

3. Write the legend in your own words...?

4. Explore one story about Matariki and write a review on it.                                          Seven stars of Matariki.

5. Do these stars have any other names? If so what are they-and where did these names originate from?

Answers

1. In the Māori language Matariki is both the name of the Pleiades star cluster and also of the season of its first rising in late May or early June, taken as the beginning of the new year. Matariki, or Māori New Year celebrations were once popular, but stopped in the 1940s. In 2000, they were revived.

 2. The names of the Matariki stars are...
1. Matariki
2. Waiti,
3. Waita,
4. Waipunarangi,
5. Tupuanuku,
6. Tupuarangi &
7. Ururangi e

3. Once there lived eight brothers. One day seven of them went hunting and out of the corners of there eyes they saw seven of the most beautiful women they had ever seen. They decided to make them there wives. But they were very bossy and they refused anything but seafood. One day they all disappeared and there husbands could not find them anywhere so the other brother who did not go hunting and find a wife, went to go look for them. He could change into a bird and so could the wives (they did not know this), so he could have a disguise and so could they. Then he heard the lady's talking up a plan to starve there husbands. He told his brothers what had happened and they caught there wives in a big magic net. All of the beautiful women were begging there husbands to RELEASE  them. So then the brother who told them about it transformed in to a very BIG bird and flew the women up to the god of the sky and he changed them in to stars. And once every year around June they have a chance to shine and reflect there beauty.

4. I think it is a great story they did a very good job of it and I like how the other brother can turn into a bird. One of my low lights about the story is that the lady's are pretty they do not deserve to be pretty.

The Matariki stars are very bright and the brightest stars in the solar system apart from the Sun...!

5. yes!!!

The Branford Park x-country run 2014

X Country Run

On Friday we had a x-country at Bradford Park I had never done a run with my class before there but listen up because I was in for a challenge......

I had a sprained my ankle and it was hard for me. I line up, all girls are nervous and scared, my friend at some point even felt sick...! I hear Dave talking to us about how many year 5 girls there are (only about 18). I hear Dave say on your marks, get set, GO !!! and the wood bangs together and I'm off........... I hear my friends and Dad cheering me on. I feel the wind blow through my hair and the slight sound of the birds singing. We come to the ditch I jump over but in a split second I'm over but it seemed like ages.

I run up a steep hill and am puffing like a shark chasing the speediest fish ever. I'm half way now and really sore in my foot. I jump over the log and Dad is running with me he stops and goes to the finish line to meet me. I run the last bit and finally hit the finish line I'm so tired and I want to pour water all over my head. Being proud I walk through and get marked and I see I've come 16th. Dad gives me a hug and kisses me.  All my friends come over and congratulate me for coming 16th when I've got a sprained ankle.

I had a great day then and am looking ford to doing it again.

Paige's awesome holiday !

My awesome holiday !!!

I went on holiday to Golden bay for 8 days in March. I did some pretty cool stuff there. On the first day I was pretty tired because... we got to the Bach at about 7:30 pm and had dinner and went to bed at about 8:45. It was a long drive there. On the second day we went to the beach for the first time, It was kind of cold but when you got used to it, it got warmer so that was great.

On the next few days we were there, we went to the dairy down the road and got ice-creams and ice-blocks... It sort of got cold in the night but it was OK because we had warm fuzzy blankets and stuff. We went out for breakfast as well we went to 6 places (our favorites). We also went kayaking to this really pretty island and fished on the sand and we put a billy bong out in the water so the fish would come.

I also went to a spooky ghost town....................................!

Thank you for letting me share my awesome holiday.
